4 Best Quiet Pellet Stoves To Keep You Warm

4 Best Quiet Pellet Stoves To Keep You Warm

My family and I love staying in during winter and hang out around the fireplace. It is one of those family bonding activities that we really enjoy.

Years back, we bought ourselves a quiet pellet stove as we heard some good things about them. After spending our first winter together, I must say that I am sold.

Not every household can have an actual fireplace, so I find that owning a pellet stove is a great alternative.

They are great at saving energy and utility costs, great for the environment (especially versus using propane), and don’t really cost that much money.

The kids love it, and nobody complains about it making too much noise (as there is a misconception that they are loud).

So in this post, I will be sharing with you which are the best quiet pellet stoves you can consider and some tips and tricks on using one.

Let’s dive in.

What to look out for when buying a quiet pellet stove? (Key features)

Buying a pellet stove and especially a quiet one can be tricky for someone who have never bought it before.

Here are some key points that you should consider while checking out what’s available. In this way, you can shortlist your options and make a better purchase.

Heat capacity

Decide what your heat requirements are.

It doesn’t work like when you buy a stove with very high heat capacity and then lower it’s level to match your needs.

You can end up having to open windows to cool down your house. Same goes for the other way round.

So it would be better to tell the seller about your needs and let them show you what’s suitable for you.

Cost

A perfect product is of no benefit to you if you can’t afford it.

Determine how much you are willing to invest and shortlist your options from the beginning itself.

And remember that cost of a pellet stove comes with the cost of pellets, fuel, installation and also a chimney.

Size

Find a space in your house which you are willing to let the stove have.

Take measurements and ask the seller to show you products that can easily fit in that space.

Noise level

Pellet stoves are known for being noisy, so this is an important factor to consider.

Many are not built with low noise levels as their top priority, but the ones you can find in this list does.

Depending on where you place you stove, noise could be one of your top factors.

Pellet hopper

The larger the hopper of your pellet stove, the more it will consume pellets.

Now, it can depend where you live because pellets are not readily available in all states of US.

You have to make sure that you are able to meet the needs of the stove.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Keeping your stove clean is very important for it to run smoothly. But, if not all the parts that need to be cleaned are accessible, won’t it be difficult to maintain its cleanliness?

While buying, check if you are able to access all parts that you will need to clean (ash pan, hopper, handles, glass door, etc). If not, you can land with a good but unclean stove which isn’t good in long term.

Environment friendliness

An environment friendly stove will not only benefit the nature but also you.

Since it will burn more efficiently, you won’t have to clean up a lot of ash remnants. There will be far little waste than a regular stove.

Also, environment friendly options are safer.

Ignition system

There are basically three varieties of ignition systems you can choose from:

  • Automatic – They are controlled by thermostat and are turned on automatically, detecting the fall in temperature
  • Self starting – Just press a button and it will start, as simple as that
  • Standard – This one has to be started manually using match and starter gel

What makes a pellet stove noisy?

If you feel that your pellet stove is excessively louder than it is normally, it may be having certain problems. But before listing them, I want you to know that whatever the problem may be, your first step should be to make sure that it is clean. It is far more important than you think it is.

Now, here are the possible issues you might encounter:

1. Fuel system

The fuel system of your pellet stove contains an automatic fuel dispenser. This is used to send fuel from the hopper to the burning chamber with the help of a motor, to ensure a steady source of heat supply.

This motor is often the culprit when it comes to noisy stoves. With time, it can lose its efficiency and become noisy if it is not maintained properly.

2. Fan

A fan is present in some pellet stoves to circulate the warm air inside a room. Usually, it will become noisy only if your appliance is filled with debris. Otherwise, it won’t be louder than a fridge.

You can opt for a stove without a fan to completely avoid this situation.

3. Imbalance of air and fuel

A noisy pellet stove can also be a case of not having enough air in it to burn the fuel. Again, this may be due to accumulation of dirt in your stove. Also, try adjusting the feed rate and see if it works.

4. Pellets

It is normal, and I find it actually quite relaxing when pellets make crackling sounds. A great background sound or just white noise on a chilly winter day!

But, it can also become an unpleasant noise because of your system being clogged with soot and ashes so make sure to clean out often.

How to make a pellet stove quieter?

Quieting your pellet stove is not a difficult task if you know how to use a screwdriver and you’re ready to do some cleaning. Here’s the step by step process you need to follow:

1. Shut it down

About an hour before you start, shut down your stove and let it cool for a while. It is important to do that to avoid any burns while working on it.

2. Heat exchanger rod

To avoid a smoky room, there’s a heat exchanger in your pellet stove.

The burning fuel heats it up first and then the heat is transferred to your room space. On accumulation of debris, its efficiency will lower down and noise will increase.

To deal with this, move the rod up and down and you can also use a brush to dust it down.

3. Clearing ash

The burning efficiency of a pellet stove is roughly 75%. So, some remnants like ashes will be left behind after burning. It is important to regularly clean the ash pan and burning pot to prevent ash from accumulating.

4. Scraping

Now, scrape out soot from the burning pot. You can use any suitable tool but make sure that you don’t use it too hard and damage your stove.

5. Clearing holes

Use a screw driver now to clear all grate’s holes. This is for proper air flow so that the fuel can burn efficiently.

6. Clean the fan

A fan loaded with junk can be a big trouble as noise. Take a medium-sized paint brush and clean the blades of the fan. Also, clean the stove’s bower mower in a similar way.

7. Tighten up everything

Start with the plastic ties around the motor and then all other screws and bolts. Loose parts will make the whole system wobbly and cause vibrations.

8. Use gasket tape

At last, apply some heat resistant gasket tape to the base of the stove and also around the chimney. Fill in the gaps between stove and hearth inserts with small crumbled tape pieces.

What pellets should I use?

Pellets are a crucial part of the whole pellet stove system so let’s have a look at the best options you’ve got.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are pellet stoves safe?

Yes, they are certainly safe, especially if you compare them to wood stoves. Most pellet stoves have features that demonstrate this, such as automatic shut down, sensors that detect overly high temperatures, and pressure switches that shuts it down when certain conditions are triggered.

Are pellet stoves noisy?

Yes, they can be. Having some moving parts, it is obvious that some noise will be there. And with time, like any other machinery, it can get worn out and consequently, the noise will increase too. This is the one flaw they have while being so efficient and eco friendly, but luckily, the models tested in this article has shown otherwise.

How loud is a pellet stove?

If we talk about a really noisy one, it can be up to 49 decibels which is too much for a home. An ideal pellet stove should make no more noise than 26 decibels. And actually, this is normal for an average, well maintained pellet stove.

Are there ventless pellet stoves?

Yes, ventless pellet stoves are available in the market and they are also much quieter than regular pellet stoves. Plus, the air in your room won’t go dry, too.

What is the life expectancy of a pellet stove?

If we assume that you clean your pellet stove regularly and maintain it really well, it will last for minimum 10 years. And, if it’s from a reputed brand, it can stay with you for 15 to 20 years.
